Description
Cholesterol and triglyceride tests are blood tests used to measure the levels of fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) in the blood. Cholesterol circulates through the bloodstream bound to a protein, forming a complex known as a lipoprotein.
Lipoprotein analysis allows for the measurement of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in the blood. The abbreviation LDL stands for “low-density lipoprotein,” which refers to a lipoprotein with low density (thickness). LDL cholesterol transports fats and a small amount of protein from the liver to various parts of the body.
High Levels
Elevated levels are observed in primary and secondary hyperlipoproteinemias. Secondary elevations can be seen in conditions such as hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, obstructive liver diseases, and diabetes mellitus.
Low Levels
Low levels may occur in cases of hyper;thyroidism, malabsorption, or congenital beta-lipoprotein deficiency (acanthocytosis).
