Description
Cholesterol and triglyceride tests are blood tests used to measure the levels of fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood. Cholesterol circulates in the bloodstream bound to proteins, forming complexes known as lipoproteins. The body uses cholesterol to build cells and produce hormones. Learn more about lipoproteins and triglycerides.
High Levels
Elevated cholesterol levels are seen in cases of primary and secondary hyperlipoproteinemia. Secondary hyperlipoproteinemia can occur in conditions such as hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, obstructive liver diseases, and diabetes mellitus.
Low Levels
Low cholesterol levels may be observed in cases of hyperthyroidism, malabsorption disorders, or congenital beta-lipoprotein deficiency (acanthocytosis).
